Menstrual Symptoms—Extremely Common, but Not Considered 'Normal'

Acupuncture for Irregular periods

Some women endure significant menstrual challenges each month, yet the expectation to carry on with their daily lives has become the social norm.

Cramps, PMS, pain, clots, heavy or light bleeding, irregular cycles - all are very common symptoms women experience with their period, but are not considered an indication of a healthy monthly flow, according to Chinese Medicine.

When we see these symptoms in clinic it signifies that there is an internal disharmony with a patients health that needs to be addressed.

Commonly used approaches are Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and moxibustion, often used together in a treatment plan to address these particular symptoms but also the underlying root cause of what is causing these symptoms to show up in the first place.

According to Chinese Medicine a healthy flow should be:

  • Regular, every 24-35 days

  • Duration: 3-7 days

  • Normal red in colour

  • Free of clots

  • Not too heavy, not too light

  • Free of any symptoms before and around menstruation
