Stress and emotional well-being
Here are seven commonly used Chinese herbal formulas that may offer daily support:
Xiao Yao San: This classic formula is frequently used for digestive issues, irritability, sleep disturbances, PMS, menstrual irregularity, low energy, and mood swings, especially when exacerbated by stress. It's often recommended during perimenopause when cycles become irregular and mood changes, anger, or irritability are prominent. In Chinese Medicine, the gut is closely linked to emotions targeting this gut brain connection and promoting healthy digestion. Research suggests Xiao Yao San may improve depression symptoms and potentially shorten the onset time of antidepressants when used in conjunction.
Suan Zao Ren Tang: This formula is known for its effectiveness in treating insomnia and sleep problems related to anxiety. While further research is needed, studies indicate Suan Zao Ren Tang may be a valuable alternative for improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety. Suan Zao Ren Tang nourishes the heart, which in Chinese Medicine houses the mind. When the mind is at rest, sleep comes more easily.
Gui Pi Tang: A versatile formula dating back centuries, Gui Pi Tang is all about your digestion and being grounded in body and mind. It can address various issues, from insomnia, anxiety, and digestive problems (like loss of appetite) to vertigo/dizziness and menstrual irregularities. Gui Pi Tang contains herbs that calm and nourish the heart blood, easing anxiety, while spleen-supporting herbs promote digestion and ground the entire body, as digestion is central to overall health. There are many variations of formulas based on the key herbs in this formula that can be adapted for specific symptoms such as anxiety, bloating, diarrhoea etc.
Tian Wan Bu Xin Tang: This formula is often used during perimenopause to address symptoms like anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, and night sweats. These symptoms are thought to arise from imbalances in Yin energy, and the formula aims to calm the mind and nourish Yin to provide relief. It is particularly suited for individuals experiencing heightened emotional sensitivity and for physical or emotional feelings of heat such as hot flushes, insomina.
You Gui Wan: This formula is important for restoring vital essence/energy and is often used for fatigue, low libido, urinary or fertility difficulties, and irregular or absent menstruation. Patients often feel cold easily or have a history of always feeling cold, and want to feel warmth, may have back and knee pain, undigested food in stools, pale urine, tendency for weight gain, to name a few possible symptoms.
Yin Qiao San: Yin Qiao San is commonly used for colds, flu, and upper respiratory infections accompanied by heat symptoms like fever and sore throat. It's a useful remedy to have on hand for these types of symptoms as it is most useful taken at the very onset of symptoms. It is not appropriate for cold symptoms where you feel chilled and don't sweat, as it can worsen those symptoms.
Yu Ping Feng San: Yu Ping Feng San (YPFS) is used to strengthen the immune system and boost energy, making it particularly beneficial before the winter months. It is believed to support white blood cell production, enhance the body's natural defenses against infections, and stimulate the immune system.

These seven formulas represent just a small amount of Chinese herbal medicine which can support a wide variety of symptoms. Formulas are often adapted as you move through treatment to always be treating your current health. A qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner can tailor herbal prescriptions to your specific needs and symptoms.
It is crucial to consult a registered Chinese herbal medicine practitioner before taking any herbal formulas. Chinese Medicine is complex, and improper use can worsen symptoms. Your practitioner can also mitigate interactions with western medications.
